The need to preserve Kingsburg Beach and to strengthen the Beaches Act in protecting all Nova Scotia beaches has received new attention this summer and new actions by KCC and area residents. The catalyst was the construction of an elevated boardwalk, near the cemetery end of Kingsburg Beach..
The fact that the Department of Natural Resources gave a permit for this structure, and approved the plans, has led to a new focus on strengthening the Beaches Act and providing for public information and input into decisions. There is also the conviction that the municipality ought to be involved in beach protection efforts.
Concerned local community members have formed an independent group, the Kingsburg Beach Action Committee
(KBAC), to oppose development on Kingsburg Beach and to urge the government to strengthen its protection of
beaches. Although separate organizations, the KCC and the KBAC plan to share information and work together to
protect the beach.

The KCC, along with other environmental organizations, has recommended to the Province for years that the Beaches Act
be strengthened. This summer, in response to the elevated boardwalk, the KCC met with representatives of the Department
of Natural Resources (DNR) for policy-level discussions, and has provided them with recommendations to strengthen the
Beaches Acts and to specifically address the issues on Kingsburg Beach.

The KCC has recommended that the Municipality of Lunenburg (MODL) commission a scientific study of Kingsburg Beach to serve as the basis of a Beach Management Plan. Such a plan would address
important issues
about the standards by which to protect the beach.
