Here's what's new September 08 |
The KCC has been given an extremely generous gift of $1.5 million by an anonymous donor. Our many thanks to this individual for valuing the KCC and for sharing our commitment to the protection of land and access for all!
This gift comes at an especially important time for conservation organizations in Nova Scotia, as the Province will soon offer dollar for dollar matching funds for the purchase of eligible lands. This individual has greatly expanded our ability to protect our area. We thank you!
By the end of 2008, the Province will make available $23 million for the purchase of undeveloped land. The money,
offered as dollar-for-dollar matching funds, is a great opportunity for KCC and other
conservation organizations to identify potential properties in need of protection, and
begin to raise funds. If our submissions are accepted, the value of our money will be doubled!

The KCC has recently purchased an important tract of land in Kingsburg. The narrow lot stretches from Kingsburg Pond, across the road, and ends at the protected Kingsburg Beach. The parcel, which includes both wet land and dunes, abuts a similar lot owned by the Province. In making this purchase the KCC was able to take another step in the protection of ecologically sensitive land, as well as continue with its commitment to providing coastal access.
That first glorious sight of Kingsburg when you crest the hill will now remain unspoiled forever!
The KCC has recently purchased the triangle of land at the corner of Kingsburg Road and Hirtles
Beach Road. The lot has frontage on Kingsburg Pond. Many area
residents urged us to save this iconic view of the Village. The value of the
purchase is enhanced by the willingness of property owners on both sides of this triangle to
donate their land. Keep tuned as the project expands!
Luke and Janet Rimmington of Rose Bay and over 100 donors to the Save Sand Dollar Beach fund have come together to help KCC acquire a property at Sand Dollar Beach. Through a combined donation/purchase agreement with the Rimmingtons, the KCC has purchased a lot that is almost adjacent to the area already owned by the Municipality. The Rimmington lot will allow the KCC to offer more space for hikers, bird watchers, and others who enjoy access to this beach.
The KCC has launched a new project designed to ensure access to our coastal area of Atlantic Canada forever. Building on existing traditional walking trails and access points, the project will include the development of a network of coastal access points and trails, as well as a coastal discovery programme. Susan Pond of Kingsburg is spearheading this project for the KCC.
In the coming months, we'll be making updates as this exciting project moves forward.

Hirtles Beach boardwalk was scattered about during post-tropical storm Noel. The 14 Construction Engineering Squadron based in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia retrieved the sections and re-located them around the perimeter of the parking lot.
Hirtles Beach Management Committee and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg are responsible for the repairs.
This spring, with funding from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage, a small cabin on Gaff Point was removed and some trails were re-routed or replaced with wood chip-covered corduroy-surfaces. Work continues to provide access that is safe for both the environment and those who enjoy the area.
