Here's what's new |
In 2008, the KCC was given $1.5 million by an anonymous donor. This enormously generous gift has opened many new possibilities for us to pursue our mission. You will see, throughout this section, evidence of what we have begun to accomplish with this important gift.
The Jill and Hazen Trueman family have made a generous donation of property on Kingsburg Pond, abutting the triangle of land that the KCC purchased in 2008.
These two pieces
ensure that the
glorious first-view of Kingsburg
will be always available. With the addition of the Trueman donation, we now
have about 430 feet of pond frontage with land that includes both wetlands and some beautiful hardwoods.
The KCC is delighted to have purchased a heavily wooded parcel of 8.9 acres stretching from shore-to-shore on Rose Head .
A Forest Management Plan has been drawn up by Picea Forestry Consultants reflecting the KCC's intent to preserve the wooded area in a conservation and rejuvenation program.
The need to preserve Kingsburg Beach and to strengthen the Beaches Act in protecting Nova Scotia
beaches has received new attention this summer and new actions by KCC and area residents.

The Province has now made available $23 million to assist with the purchase of ecologically sensitive land, paying 50 - 70% of the cost of eligible property. We are working to identify land that has the necessary characteristics - biodiversity being a major criteria.

In June 2009 work to improve the Gaff Point Trail included back-packing in woodchips to fill-in the "corduroy paths" constructed with fallen trees.
A volunteer day was organized and funded by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. Assistance was provided by local volunteers, the KCC, the Nova Scotia Nature Trust and Katimavik students. See our '09 newsletter and scroll to pages 9, 10 and 11 for further updates and details about trail improvement and stewardship of Gaff Point.
